Thanks to all who gave me feedback and direction on my SA coil posts yesterday. As update for all I put in a new coil making sure it is wired same as tractor for ground. Then hotter plugs.
I took off the air cleaner assembly to inspect choke and air tube. Choke is correct and open when it should be and short hose between carb and tube was not blocked but was about half full of an oily gas mixture. Prob. my reason for carbon fouled plugs and rich running. I have clean 30 wt. in the cup and had not run the tractor yet today. By putting palm over the top of the air cleaner tube when the tractor was running i thought it felt like strong suction. But the fluid in the hose seemed like about 90 per cent gas, rest oil.. I will say the tractor did start and idle much better (air cleaner off) So do you think I could have a carb float problem ? This is a rebuild with only an hour or two of run time. Air cleaner tube needing cleaned somehow? If the float is wrong will gas overflow and sit in the throat where the choke is? I appreciate any direction you folks send. Steve

Had black smoke puffing out the exhaust. Had to go 2 or 3 times on the float to get it right. Haven"t had any more problems in 3 years. Set the float down a fraction at a time.

Steve: I might offer in addition to my experience with modern day carb kits, I have been reluctant to buy a new carb. Maybe that is the answer, just maybe some of these old carb housings are no longer worthy of a new kit. Right now I have two tractors that ocasionally leak through carb overnight. 80% of the time they don't, so the float must be working right some of the time.

Jim may have given us the answer to this problem. Abandon the factory gas tank, put a tank under the SA platform with an electric fuel pump.

Just to enlighten the other respondents Steve sent me a personal e mail on this matter. I wrote back and told him I didn't have an answer for him. As far as I'm concerned we have two problems, the first being modern day gasolines and the second being the quality of carb kits one can buy.

I've tried professional carb rebuilders, tried CaseIH technicians and tried buying the kit and installing it myself. About the only difference I see is the money I don't spend in doing it myself. In all three repair senarios, 80% of the time the float works as it should. I suspect that figure climbs to 100% while tractor is in operation as the motion of the tractor keeps the float from hanging up. If I don't turn the gas off at tank, 20% of the time my SA and 130 will be leaking if left that way.

When these tractors were new, it wasn't unusual to get 10 to 15 years out of a carb kit. The only way I would even consider a new carb or a professional rebuild is if they offer me a 10 year absolute guarentee, yes they even have to offer to pay for the gas that leaks out on my shop floor as well as any repairs to the floor. I worked these gas tractors back when they were new, we never had to give a thought to turning the gas off overnight.

My answer is, "When at parts counter demand a better carb kit."

Janicholson what I should have said was this is a rebuilt carb with an hour of run time. I think I led you to believe the whole motor was a rebuild. My mistake. I have 30 wt. in the cup and it is just a little below the line. I had cleaned out the very top breather piece overnight with a solvent but not the entire cleaner. Brownie did you have gas spilling into your choke throat on your SC or can you just tell by ear that it was to rich? Did you have any physical symptoms? I had originally ruled my carb out since it was a 'rebuild' and I figured the folks making it would do it correctly. Now I am wondering. Steve

Float level is somewhat critical on these units[A B C SA SC]. WE put a new needle & seat in the SC & had to go 3 times to get the float level right. It ran way rich at the original float setting & kept dropping the level to finally get it right.

Rule 1 on these (and any tractor with a fuel tank higher than the carb) is to shut off the fuel at the tank when the tractor is shut off. (even for 5 min). Gasoline will eat up the inside of the hose going to the carb from the air cleaner and cause the stuff to be blacker than pure gasoline. OOORRR the air cleaner pan could have been overfilled, or filled with a very light oil (should be 20W I think) If it is only an hour old, it needs to run in before making many decisions, with one exception it should not be run excessively rich, or the cylinders will be wetted down and the oil will be diluted. Running the engine with the aircleaner on should be OK. If blackish smoke, correct the rich mixture before continuing.
