Assuming I decide to go through with fixing up the old B, should I go with original 6 volt system, or repair cobbled up 12 volt it was converted to. (the alternator is locked up)

I would go with the 12v cause 6v is weak, my uncle's SH has 6v and we fought with that thing for three hours on friday, finally put the reg. that was on my 300 and put it on the SH and that fixed the problem, starter is still weak though. Go with 12v.

You can buy a rebuilt alternator for less money than a refurbished generator, but if you can find a generator for a reasonable amount of money, that is the way I would go. The six volt generator system installed properly, all connections clean, bright, and tight, with 0 or 1 guage battery cables, will perform quite well and furnish more cranking power than you need. Plus, the generator will fit under the hood with no problem.

If just the front bearing is siezed, & the rest of the unit is ok, you can replace the bearing on the alternator & save a few bucks.

Assuming you want a usable tractor, and not a show queen, I would go with the 12v system for two reasons only. they are (when done correctly) nearly maintanence free. and second they charge the battery more adequately. I like the mitsubishi alternators out of mid 80s Nissan PU. They are small and work well. Others will say go to 6v and that is ok too as long as you have all the parts to replace the missing gen regulator and light bulbs. The 12v sys will cost less than scrounging new 6v components.
Just my thinking,
JimN
