I am going to look at a 300 tomorrow and would like some suggestions as what to check on these tractors. I am more familiar with the letter series models. Is there anything in particular that I should notice? From the road, the sheet metal looks good, appears to be original reddish-brown(rusty) paint, and the tires look decent. Do these have power steering or independent pto? Also, do these have a TA and if so, how do I check this? I am not too up to speed on these new fangled contraptions. Thanks for the help.

A 300 may or may not have P/S, T/A or IPTO. Check play in steering, 1/4 turn can usually be adjusted out. 1/2 turn is excessive ! To check T/A, while driving tractor, pull t/a lever back and ride the brakes hard. If it doesn't slip, it's probably OK. If brakes are weak it is not expensive to replace discs, balls or springs, less than $100 if you replaced all of the above. Checking pto is a different story. You can make sure it turns on & off as it should, but to properly test, it needs a load on it. You can rebuild the water pump for about $40 or less as opposed to buying them rebuilt. Everything else to check is like any other tractor, these are just the most likely problem areas.

Manual Steering:Play, leaks, and broken boxes.Wheels that wont turn equally and when used wobble and have a mind of their own.

Power Steering:Does it work? Leaks.Leaks and spray up the column.

TA:Lever on left of dash.Does it hold up under stress? Is the gearbox full of 80/90 or Hy Trans?

Clutch:Slipping? Hard to depress?

Shifter:Hard to move? Wont release from a preselected gear? (possible TA/Main clutch mis adjustment).

Brakes:Working? Only one work? Are linings wet with trans lube? Bull pinion seal leaks? Parking brake lever still there?

Radiator:Leaking? Overheating? They arent available new.

Front Tires:Are they old pickup tires? Bald? Get some ribbed ones. They steer easier.

Independent PTO:Does it work? Bands out of adjustment? Expensive fix.

Hydraulic Pump: Leak fluid into engine? Noisy? Hard metal piping leaking, rusted? Expensive fixes.

Hydra Touch Levers:Leaking? Sticking? Handles broken?

Emblems:Are they Missing? None are available new.(but the IH nose emblem).

Tach:Works? Cable missing? Drive in distributor base broken, missing?

Water Pump: Leaking? Rebuilts are $300.
