I just picked up a 1948 Farmall H and brush hog for $200. I had originally been quoted $600 for the pair thinking that it needed a new head gasket or possible cracked head(water in oil). When the owner went to move it he found that the engine was froze.

My questions are... How bad is the engine overhaul? Where is the best place for parts or kits? Is there any place on the web that has free instructions, guides, or info on the process.

Anyone with basic mechanical skills and a good shop manual can do it. If you want to really do a bang-up job, and take the block out (I recommend it) then you will need a way to support the back half of the tractor and a means of lifting front end/engine parts off from it.

Parts are up to you. This site offers kits, you can still get them from IH, (or New Holland or what ever) or you could shop around parts houses if you have one or more that you like and do business with. I have used part house parts a lot mostly because I have them do the head and block work for me and then they have access to kit parts like cam bearings, wrist pins etc. Your call.

This site contains a lot of reference material in the forums if you spend some time to search them, but a shop manual is still a very good investment.

Spend some time searching the archives here on this site. Do a search for "stuck engine" There are many places selling parts, including this site. I think a video is available here also.
Get yourself a manual & parts book to start.
