Wayne s-axle seals in reply to tomturkey, 05-31-2006 06:46:37
thanks all--Wayne can a person just replace the outer seal on an "M" ? Thought maybe that replacing outer and keeping it greased would work. One side slings 90wt and the other leaks by when setting. tom

There's only a outer axle seal and felt. Remove the cast wheel from axle and brush rust or crud from axle, then remove 4 bolts 3/8 diametter 9/16 wrench and flange from axle. The seal is in the flange the one that has grease fitting in it unless it was updated sometime.

Tom,
I got axle seals for my M from local IHCase dealer. It is quite a job as Wayne says and I have not yet put them in . However, I found that after I pumped a lot of grease in the axle zerks and after a bit of field work, the leaks almost stopped (the tractor had been sitting for a long time). Just some experience to ponder.
Mel

There are inner & outer seals in the axle housing; you need to drain the transmission oil, remove the PTO, remove the wheel(s), remove the bull gear(s), take off the axle housing(s), pull the axle out, drive out the seals, and then reverse the process.
Worst case; remove the transmission cover.
Have fun! Be safe & securely block the tractor. Doing 1 side at a time helps.
