Cub Transmission Shaft

A week or so ago I wrote a question about the gap between the transmission upper shaft and the PTO shaft on a Farmall Cub. I learned a hard lesson about working on these old tractors (even though this is my 6th tractor). Don't trust that the tractor was assembled correctly by the previous "mechanic" who worked on it. I installed the new transmission shaft input seal just like it was when I took it apart. Turns out this seal assembly had been previously installed backwards. With this seal assembly backwards it doesn't hold the input bearing in place and the transmission shaft has about 1/4 inch play (thus the large gap between the transmission shaft and the PTO shaft). Now I have to take the tractor back apart. In the manual it says that the tractor can be split at the front of the transmission. Are there any problems doing this if I support the tractor like they say in the manual and roll the back section away from the front (clearing the long transmission input shaft)? Roger

Roger, if you support the tractor and follow the safety precautions, you won"t have any problems. I put mine on a come-a-long and block it up with small timber under the pan. After you split it, you will be able to roll the rear end away from the tractor. I use a come-a-long to raise it and lower it as needed to align it for going back together and as a extra safety precaution for the cribbing. One person can handle it, but it will be safer with two. After you do your first one, you will be more confident the next time. By the way, I did this exact same thing two weeks ago because the PO had put the seal retainer in backwards and I was by myself.

I don"t think there will be any problem. Had to remove my engine, then looked back thru the torque tube to see the seal leaking badly so had to remove the torque tube. I put a railroad jack uner the differential and a small hydraulic under the draw bar. You should put some wedges under the radiator casting that will keep it from twisting.
