i am in the process of getting an H home. i am new to this tractor thing and am needing help on the unsticking of frozen pistons(i believe) to the cylinder wall. what do i take off first and what can i dump in the spark plug holes to free them up. i really don't want to get into any deeper than possible just to get her running. also how do i drain the fluid( whatever it is) out of the engine once i have the pistons freed. any help greatly appreciated!!!!! !

How badly neglected is the tractor? If it was sitting outside with nothing covering the exhaust, then you're probably going to end up with a full tear-down of the engine. If it was sitting in a relatively weather-tight barn, you might be in luck and the pistons are only slightly stuck.

Beyond just the pistons, you can have stuck piston rings, even after the engine is freed. You can have stuck valves, too.

Rusty has it right on about the tranny fluid. It works better then almost any thing else you can try. But I'll add a little to what he said. You should if you can blow out the cylinders before you put the tranny fluid in them. You just take an air hose and blow gun and blow air in to the spark plug holes. Becare because all sorts of stuff can come flying out but the big reason to do it is to remove any water that maybe in the cylinders

If the engine is indeed stuck, and it is very likely that it is, then it is guaranteed that you will be getting in deeper than you wanted to. You can start by pouring some automatic transmission fluid in through the spark plug holes. Transmission fluid is just as good as any magic potion penetrating fluid and is cheaper. the transmission fluid might work, and it might not work. If it works, you can get it out by sinmply cranking the engine over with the spark plugs removed. If it doesn't work, you can get it out when you remove the cylinder head.

I can't add anything to the many opinions in the archives -- do a search and you will find more than you want to know -- all the way from a few minute job to new pistons and sleeves, and possibly a block. No way to tell until you try.
