I was discing with my 240U. When I got done I went to slow the tractor down and nothing happened. It runs wide open no matter where I put the throttle. Everything moves freely without any binding when the tractor is shut off. I can move the rod that goes to the carb and it will stay where ever I put it. Seems like maybe a spring broke in the governor. Any suggestions? Should I take the whole thing off as a unit? Is there any thing else I should check?

Overnight thinking ---- possible needle roller bearing in the governor " output arm" of the governor is rusty/ dry or bearing roller has broken. We had one in our A which caused problems similar to what you are describing. If I remember correctly, there are 2 bearings which carry this governor shaft & there is a small seal on the "output" end of the shaft.

Before taking the governor off, try seeing if the throttle rod can be moved by hand. If it can be moved & the engine speed varies, there is trouble in the governor probably. If the throttle rod doesn't move easily[engine remains at one speed], look for binding in joints between governor arm & carb. Looking back, I should clarify that the throttle rod is the one which works the throttle shaft on the carb.

I have a 54 Super H. Same dang thing. I was mowing just fine and then drove out of the field onto gravel and engine took off. super high rpms and couldn't slow it down with throttle at all. had to shut it down. I'm clueless too.

I took my governor off and found a bunch of problems. The screws that hold the fork to the rocker shaft decided to back out after 47 years. Once the first screw was out the fork moved and wore against the governor weights. The main spring was almost wore completely thru. The bearings were junk. The damper sping had a coil broke off it. Fortunatlely the dealer was able to get everything I needed to rebuild it. I just have to put it back on the tractor and adjust it. The bearing end of the rockshaft was wore bad but the dealer wanted $170 for a very simple part so I welded and reground it and it's better than new. One of the benefits of being a machinist by trade. I hope you are able to get your unit fixed. Give me a shout if you have any questions.

I've never worked on a 240U, but I think that they would be the same, or very similar to a Super C or 200.

There are several springs in the governor, the one that usually breaks gives the opposite symptoms to what you describe, that is: it will idle, but not speed up. That spring pulls the throttle open against the action of the flyballs.

It sounds like somthing is binding in the governor and the only thing I can think of to suggest is to take it off and look inside. Get a repair manual. It will give you a diagram of how things are supposed to be inside, and a set-up procedure to guide you putting it back on.
