Need to know a few things about the 400 I just bought. how to put on a new fan belt. also past owner said that if battery is left hooked up over night it will drain it dead. Sounds like a ground to me. this tractor is a 12volt i am told. did it come from the factory like that.
I am adding a like to some pics of the tractor. I paid 2700 for it. The power steering and ta work. brakes seem weak. pto works

I will still stick to my guns, my W400 is gas and it came with 12V. even has the 12V batt. box also.says 12V on the starter too. its an original tractor with Power Steering on top of that too. maybe your farmalls are diff. but cant see it.

Lots of penetrating oil in the area of the fan hub[threads] helps. The liberal use of an 18 inch punch to get the front half of the pulley started to turn doesn't hurt too much either. Of course, some of these hubs can be adjusted easily with your bare hands[ haven't seen one yet, though]. Getting the lock pin loose is sometimes the hardest part of this whole operation. Patience & lots of penetrating oil help.

when new the 400 gas tractors were six volt. the lp and diesel tractors were twelve. there were quite a few 450 gas tractors built that were six volt also. the later 450 gas tractors were twelve volts from the factory.

I had a Case VAC that I converted to 12 VDC. The alternator that I used was a self exciting Delco alternator. It did the same thing. I checked the single wire going to the alternator and found that it was drawing juice from the battery. You can either install a diode, make sure you wire it correctly because they are poled, or you can install a toggle switch and that should solve your problem, if it has an alternator like the one I described.

To change fan belts you need to loosen the set screw on water pump pulley and turn outside half out so belt drops down, and remove from crank pulley then work it aroun fan.most often that top pulley is seized in the threads. these tractors came out with 12v system, first model.

Looks like a pretty straight old 400. I have had two or three of them over the years and really like them. I really don't know what to tell you about the battery situation. That tractor had a 6 volt system on it originaly. If the conversion was done neatly and correctly I don't think that would have anything to do with the battery draining down. You can check the ground but I doubt that is your problem. I would look at all the wiring and see if anything looks suspicious. If not get a test light and see if the coil has juice going to it when the key is off. I am a little suspicious that when someone converted it to 12 volt they hooked something up wrong that is draining that battery. By the way that key and switch in the picture is original equipment. If it works I would keep it. I don't think that switch is available from CNH anymore.
