What kind of tractors do I have?

Hello,

I just picked up a couple of WD9's over the last two weekends. One is supposed to be a '51 model and the serial number is WD9-WDCB58228W12B. The other is supposed to be a '48 model and the serial number for that one is WD9-WDCB35222W12B. Strange thing is the '48 model has disk brakes? The tranny casting number is 359844-R1. The tranny casting number for the '51 model is 8866-DE. Is it possible that I have a SWD-9 rear half on the '48 model? Maybe a 600 or a 650 rear? The '48 also has 4 spoke steering wheel while the '51 has a 3 spoke wheel.

I can't read the serial numbers on the engine yet I need to pull a couple of injector lines but, the engines have visibly different heads on them also. The '48 model has a head stamped 8101DM and L6 27B
The '51 model has a head stamped 278292R2 and 9 22m and it has three small plates about 2x3 inches with four bolts each between the injectors. It also has a large pipe thread hole (1" I think) in the front left corner of the head. It is plumbed with pipe to a smaller pipe thread hole (3/4 I think) on the top left rear corner. Can anyone tell me what I have?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I don't know about the W series, but M's had disc brakes optional, maybe the same with your tractor.

IH did not offer disc brakes as an option on the M but the last few M's built did have disc brakes just before the changeover to Super M. Earlier M's could be fitted with aftermarket Lambert disc brakes. If you see a M with disc brakes it either has Lambert brakes of is a 1952 M. I don't believe Lambert brakes were offered for the 9 series.

Look for casting date on rear end of your 48. Sounds like the rear of a Super, 600, or 650 on a 48 front. Heads may have cracked and been changed over the years on either or both tractors.

Hello,

What format would that be in (MM/DD/YYYY) or what. Which area of rear end or tranny?

Thanks,

Mark

Date code has month/day/letter for year, example 12/3/R would be 1948. R-48, S-49, T-50, U-51, V-not used, W-51, X-52, Y-53, Z-54, A-55, B-56, C-57, D-58, etc. Look on sides of rear casting, transmission top casting, all major castings.

Harold,

Date code on the tranny says C making it a '57. Would that make it off of a 600 or 650? Strange thing is that the back cover half of the rear end is R making it a '48, probably original to the tractor. The rest of the major castings seem to be R too. I can tell the disk brakes are not aftermarket as the tranny housing has no bolt holes to bolt on the band style brake covers.

Thanks for all the help,

Mark
