I got a problem with my super c, today I used it in a prade to pull a hay wagon and it ran great. On the way home it just died!! So after towing it home I, looked for spark, got spark, ok got it to turn over but all it wants to do is back fire out of the carb. What went wrong here? It was running great until..... that happened!!! I also changed the points, the only other thing I can see is that the coil is getting hot after only a few mins, with the switch on. Thanks for the Help Andrew

I would agree with what has bee said. I have had that happen to me on my 200 . the small gears inside the dist housing had got dry and stripped the teeth off. not hard to fix. like has been said remove number 1 spark plug ,crank over till you feel compression and stop there , look to see where your rotor is pointed,should be to number 1 cyl. had a neighbor that had same problem on a H. good luck. let us know what you find.

Andrew: I have to go along with Hal's test check, you should do that anyhow before you remove the distributor. First I would check to see if rotor turns without engine turning.

My first reaction was someone switched some spark plug wires on you but that didn't happen as you were driving home.

My next suggestion and I had this happen once, there is a very small gear drive in housing just ahead of distributor. This transfers power from timing gears to the distributor. When mine went, it would get off a few degrees, act like your description, then quit. I turned it a bit on starter it did come right once, and started but smooth running was short lived. I removed the distributor cap and found I could turn the rotor quite freely, although it would catch in spots. The small gear was striped.

Remove No1 sparkplug and bring that piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Hold your thumb over the plug hole while someone hand cranks the engine slowly until you feel pressure against your thumb. Then look for the timing mark on the flywheel while they slowly keep cranking. You can also drop a large handle screwdriver into the hole and watch the screwdriver until it quits rising. Your timing mark should be very close. It may be hard to see too. Once you have it aligned with indicator remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. No1 plug is near the radiator. Your rotor should be at the No1 plug tower. If it's off the engine may have jumped time. Take a good look at the inside of the distributor cap for any cracks. Hal
