My 1940 "A" has one cast iron rear wheel (casting 8529-D)and one that is stamped steel. This is the center part of the wheel that the rim mounts to. Is this correct?

Along that same line of thought, did the counter-weight cast centers ever appear on Farmall Cubs ?

The As were shipped with a cast center on the drivers side.

I have wondered the same, but to the best I can find a heavy right wheel was not used. Maybe they figured a meat and potatoes guy sitting on the seat was enough ballast for that size of tractor.

Yes, it"s correct. The heavy cast wheel is a "counterweight" to counter the weight of the engine on the left. Cast wheel goes on the right (seat) side, and the cast wheel weight, plus driver weight, balances the tractor somewhat. Otherwise, engine side would be heavier, and cause tractor to tip easier.

I think it has more to do with equalizing the traction rather than tipping since without the cast wheel , the left side would have more weight on it causing the right tire to spin easier.
