Hi all, Got the M in the field for the first time last weekend! It has not seen the field for 15 or 20 years. I did a lot of things to it with your help and everything seems solid except some sputtering. It will run fairly well with the choke out some. I set the adjustments per book. I put new plugs in it. Wiring is new. I took the carb off twice and checked float adjustment per book and checked for dirt in gas line. I will put new points and condenser in it. l will double check timing this weekend and check the valve adjustment. Any other ideas?

Here's a tip for finding intake vacuum leaks. Carefully spray the intake gasket area with carb-cleaner (the flammable aerosol type). If you have an air leak the engine will rev up and smoothe out momentarily when it gets a wiff of spray. Don't be fooled by overspray getting sucked in to the air cleaner. Good luck!

I think Rusty is on it....the service manual, carb. settings are just a good starting point....you will have to do futher fine tunning...

Having to pull the choke out says that it is starved for fuel a little. One of 2 things come to mind. The first is that you still don't have a good fuel flow. The second thing is that you may have a vacumm leak. If you crack the fuel line at the carb you should be able to see a good fuel flow. Pulling the choke will increase the suction and uplift in the carb.

Where would likely be a vacuum leak besides carb to manifold connection? I remember checking the manifold bolts and they are tight. I don't know how good the manifold gasket is. There was quite a bit of sediment in the sediment bowl. Could some dirt be stuck in the carb ports or do they flush themselves pretty well? The carb bowl was clean. The carb screen was fairly clean. The carb has been recently refurbished by an experienced shop.

You might want to turn the load adjustment screw on the carburetor out by 1/2 to 1 full turn, this will let a little more fuel into the engine, and might cure that sputtering. Sounds like you have already covered the rest of the bases.
