Where do I start? I got my M all tore apart. The engine is cracked in the number 3 cylinder not the sleeve. I found the exact same cast number block to replace it 'cause my machinist said it would cost about a grand to fix mine. My 8574 head is cracked in the corners of three of the combustion chambers, it's getting fixed. The clutch housing was broke, it's getting fixed. The good news is it looks like my tranny/diff is good. I cleaned out 62 years worth of metal shavings with some diesel and the gears all mesh together real well. The bearings seem to spin good without any binding. But, I got $1800 in this thing and I ain't even paid the machine shop yet. Has anyone else had all these problems with the same tractor or God mad at me? My wife is madder than a wet hen 'cause our bank account is rapidly dwindling. She threatened to make me sleep out in the barn with the 'ol girl. Luckily it's warm out or I might freeze out in the barn.

Hey, don't feel bad. I have at least that much in my M. Call it $2000. Adding to which I just forked out $1200 for brand new tires and rims. Still, never had so much fun as I have over the last 4 months rebuilding this M. And that includes breaking the pinion shaft bearing cage and pulling the top of the transmission. Sunday will be the day my M sees its new tires and goes plowing.

And I still have yet to paint it...

Well Newpuller , in a word -Yes ! I bought mine off ebay . I don't recommend that unless the tractor is close enough to go look at before you bid . When I got it home I pulled the oil pan and cleaned out the leaves and sludge and a couple of twigs . Anyway , it runs OK and it drives OK and the tires hold air BUT a ton of things are wrong with it starting with the lack of paint . The bearings are bad in the bolster making it tough to turn , the rear end leaks gear oil out the two front seals and it makes a whirring/soft rattling noise when in neutral or any gear unless it's coasting unloaded down a hill at any speed , then it's quiet , the noise might be because when I changed the gear oil the old oil was full of water and with a flashlight I could see that the tranny gears are rust pitted or it could be the front bearings are bad . The muffler is not put on right and it lets rain water seep into the engine and the pto shaft seal leaks . When I put oil in the engine this morning after draining the rain water out the new oil poured out the front crank seal as I was filling it , but it doesn't leak while it's running - go figure - , and the belt drive output shaft seal leaks . The problems I have with mine I hope are all easy fixes since I don't think I'll have to open anything up to fix them unless the tranny noise is a little deeper than the input shaft bearing or the front countershaft bearing , regardless though I'm just going to put in new seals for the time being . But hey , I bought it for something to keep me busy so I guess I got a good one for that ! Good Luck with your's . Take care ! ...Randy

Well as for fixing the cracked hole i have had many fixed and it sure did not cost a grand as it is and easy fix as all the has to be done is over bore that hole and install a heavy wall repair sleeve and bore it to take the stock sleeve as for the head they can be fixed but you also can find a better head . I don't know where you are from but if ya are in the Buckeye then you need to get to know Dan Roberts from Roberts Farm equipment as he is good people to know when one needs parts for a Farmall.

As I have said before "It's all part of the game". Unless you know who the previous owner(s) of the tractor were, how it was treated, etc, you never know until you get into it. I have a monthly budget, it almost always gets to zero, sometimes negative. My wife spent a pile of money when she was working. Now we are both retired and I'm spending the pile of money.
