656 carburetor

I recently cleaned and overhauled the carburetor on my 656. I put new gaskets, float, float seat, and needle in. When the tractor sits overnight, there will be a few drops of gas on the bottom of the drip hole. Does anyone know if this is normal? When the tractor is running, there is no gas dripping there. Even after it has been shut off for a couple of hours, there will be no gas there, but let it sit overnight and the next day there will be a few drops there. Is this something that can be fixed, or is it nothing to worry about? I think it has to be caused by the float needle leaking?

Thanks,

Don

That is normal after shut down , it is and UP DRAFT CARB and while it is running all fule vapor goes up and what goes up must come down and when you shut them off what was on it's way up falls back down and you will get a few drops out the weep hole . Now if there is a big puddel then the carb is leaking . Everybody thinks that when ya see a couple of drips from a updraft that the first thing they need to do is tear into the carb to see what makes it tick , well unless there is a big puddel or the gas is running out of it full stream then leave it alone.

Thanks for the advice! I think I will leave it alone, because so far there isn't any gas on the floor, just a few drops hanging on to the bottom of the carb.
I don't know if you remember, but you responded to my hydraulic problem on this tractor earlier this year where I had lost all the hydraulics. The problem was that the hub had sheared off the pressure plate just like you said. So, thanks again! Your advice was very helpful! I have another question, though, is the hub shearing off a common problem? Could there be something else wrong that would have caused those rivets to shear or is it just normal wear and tear? I have put about 40 hours on the tractor since replacing the pressure plate and so far everything works fine.

If a tractor is used alot for PTO operation the inputshaft and perssure plate hub take a beating and after time they will fail brushoggen and sliage choppen puts a lot of strain on them as there is no lube to help out and when metal to metal works it wears . They will usualy last as long as the clutch and pressure plate . When that time comes it is wise to install a new input for the pto and all you can do at that time is put a littel grease or neverseeze on the splines and stuff it together .

My 560 does that if I don't shut the fuel off at the tank. You might just do that if you want to keep the gas from dripping on your floor.

Don,

If that is all it is leaking, I sure wouldn't worry much about it. Chances are it will heal itself after that N/Seat has a chance to work a little.

I have run the tractor for 40 hours since I overhauled the carburetor. Do you think that is enough time for the needle and seat to heal themselves or will it take longer?

Thanks,

Don

Was a gasket installed under the seat when it was installed? Is the seat tight? Is it possible that there is a hairline crack in the casting under the seat? Just wondering if the needle was a viton tip or standard type? It should shut off completely.

I installed a new gasket with the new seat and it is tight. I don't think the casting is cracked. I purchased the overhaul kit from the local Case-IH dealer, so the needle is whatever they supply -- I don't know whether it is viton or standard. I also installed a new float since that came with the kit.

The kit came from Case-IH so you got the best kit there is, and the needle most likely is the viton tipped needle valve, which is just about all you can get anymore. The viton tipped needle valves do not usually cause any trouble, but occasionally they do give trouble, so you might want to doulble check it, and while you are in there double check your float setting. I think that carb uses a double float, so you want to make certain that both sides of the float are set exactly the same, and also make absolutely certain that both floats do not rub or hang up on the fuel bowl. The float can be manipulated so that it clears everything.
