Just got a 1946 B, and wondering what is original and what's not. The gearshift knob is steel, has IH stamped into it, looks original, but I thought they were plastic or rubber. Also the air cleaner has the glass jar precleaner. The '44 B doesn't have this. Which is correct?

The others have it correct. The steel knob is original. I have a 1945 I-6 with the steel gearshift knob.

Yes, it probably is original. I have a 46 model W-9 with steel gear shift knob.

While the war was already over, the shortages of materials may have still existed and IH may have had plenty of those steel knobs on hand - not to be wasted they would have installed them until they ran out -- then switch back to the rubber.

The steel shift knob was used on tractors made during WW2, it is not likely that a 1946 tractor would have one, but it is possible. The glass jar air cleaner was an option, and does a much better job of straing out the dirt before it gets into the oil bath air cleaner.
