I bought a 1950 H a few days ago and when I got her home I pulled her around the yard in 5th gear to make sure she was not locked up. she turned over fine and was puffing right alone, although I did not try to crank her up. Went out yesterday put on new battery an cables she would not turn over. I thought maybe starter, took it off and it worked fine.Come to find out she is locked up all of a sudden. Tryed rocking back and forth but she won"t give. What in the world happened.

Pull the spark plugs, leave the ign button off, and have someone crank it, while you watch the plug holes (from a discrete distance). If gasoline comes out, you didnot turn off the fuel at the tank when stopping for the night (a necessity on these tractors, even for 10 minutes). If it was water, there may be gaskets or cracks in castings, not good. If it still won't turn the starter may be jambed (looseen it, wiggle, then tighten) If it wont turn put about 4 tblspoons of auto trans fluid in the cylinders and wait a day. Keep us informed,

How would gasoline get from the tank into the cylinders with the tractor just sitting there?

Also, what posesses a person to drag a tractor around the yard in 5th "just to see if it's free?" Is that a valid mechanic's technique? There are so many less spectacular, and less potentially disastrous, ways to check if the engine is free...

A full tank of fuel, A tight choke shaft, the fuel valve on the sediment bowl on, and a leaky or stuck needle valve. The manifold fills up and runs over into the cylinder head. Been there and had it happen.

i wonder if you fiddled with the gear shifter after you pulled it around you might have goten it stuck between gears mash the clutch and have someone try to turn the fan blade to see if it will turn over or maybe try the starte with clutch mashed if it will turn over you will have to take the gear shifter out and realign those three notches on the shift rails
