I picked up a John Deere 2 14" bottom Plow. I think the number is #12 or #612or #12 this is cast into the beam. Anyway I cant seem to get this plow to dig. all it wants to do is skim along the surface and not go into the ground. I even had both wheels off the ground and it still will not dig. How do I get this thing to work? Thanks for the Help Andrew

Hi Andrew, Is there by any chance a chain hooked to the hitch that goes up and hooks to something? If this is the case you need to unhook it or loosen it way up. I cant remember but I have a set and the tighter the chain raises the rear wheel. For transporting I think . If this chain is there it could be your problem JON

Andrew: Set you plow flat on a floor, if the points look like sled runners, that is exactly how they will perform. They will ride the plow right out of the ground.

Go buy yourself a new set of points. then rebuild the old ones, having the new ones as a guide. No point in rebuilding the old ones if you don't know what they should look like.

I have welded homemade points to plows many times.
Any farm country welder should be able to add some 8" down points for you for next to nothing.

You can also buy used points from auctions or sellers.

But heres the real thing: an education costs money. Go buy a set of new points to see what they do and what they look like and then you will know what you are doing. AND if you are only doing a small garden these new points will last you many years.

ALSO- Make sure you have the plow hitch set right. The hitch/tongue adjustment is just as important as the depth setting. If you are using a three point drawbar and you do not have it low enough the plow will float.

Set it down on flat (concrete, or plywood) and look at the Shares, ad points. They are the parts that cut allong the bottom touching the flat surface. If the very edge is up, and a rounded area 1/2" behind that is touching, they need to be replaced. Removing the bottom rounded area by grinding can't hurt.

It sounds to me like your plow shares aren't digging in. They may be worn or maybe not the right type for that plow.

I don't know much about JD plows, but on the older trailer plows that IH made, the plow depended on the share to pull it into the ground.

There are a lot of adjustments that can be made to the older plows too to make them work right. Without actually seeing it, it's hard to say what the problem may be. If you know an older, retired farmer in your area, he may be able to look at it and tell you exactly what you need. That's what I did. Plowing is as much an art as it is a science and the fellow I asked taught me a lot about it.

Can I weld on new points or something? by adding some flat stock to the current cutting edges? I dont need to do a 40 acres with it just plow a garden, those new points look expensive and I'm not even sure the number of the plow. thanks Andrew

Andrew,

Plow points (shares) are a cheap investment and if you go to tractor supply or a temco, you should be able to save some money. Your friendly JD dealer can probably supply the points and rob you in the process...they do me everytime i am forced to shop there! But, worn out points are just that...go buy new ones and get your plowing done. Another factor is this time of year, the ground is getting dryer and harder and it gets worse. You'll be amazed at how your plow works with fresh points.
