carbonation gauge farmall A

There is a gauge right below my oil filter that says carbonation gauge that I assume is telling me oil pressure. While using my A to mow this morning the level of this steadily dropped from between 40 and 50 to about 30. There is no sign of an oil leak externally, no oil in the water and no smoke. Also, after I turned it off, it didn't want to fire back up. I just replaced the coil, condenser and points and it has been firing first crank. I assume these are separate issues, although I thought I'd mention it anyway. Any thoughts?

Randy

The gauge you have discribed is to measure gas so it will not give you a true reading . The gauge you need will measure liquid witch does not compress . So get rid of it and buy a oil presure gauge . You will get a propper reading . Tim

Simply put, BULL!

If the gauge is still accurate, it will read oil preessure just as correctly as it did gas pressure.

As oil gets hot, it gets thinner, and the oil pump doesn't work as efficiently. Naturally, there will be some drop in oil pressure on ANY engine as it warms up. 30PSI hot, if the gauge is accurate, is plenty of pressure for that engine.

On the restart problem, try jumpering the two wires below thw switch. My switch went bad and drove me nuts for awhile. Sometimes start, sometimes not. During a "no way it would start" session, I put the blade of my pocket knife across the switch, and she fired immediately.

I would have to assume that a "carbonation" gauge was used by a beer or winemaking industry, or perhaps when "cooking" grain for a still. Probably measured pressure produced by the ferment. This is all just a guess, but you definately want to replace it with an oil pressure gauge. Sounds like someone had that gauge laying around, and decided to stick it on the tractor. Might even work to some degree, but probably ain"t no where near accurate.

Let me get this right. You have a carbonation gauge that tells you the oil pressure? Then let me ask you this: Does this A have a barometer that tells you the engine temperature?

It's a pressure gauge that someone had laying around, so he used it. It is used to measure the pressure of carbon dioxide. Could even be correct.

Pressure is pressure, so it probably is as accurate as any "real" oil pressure gauge.
