I"ve got a Farmall H with 36 inch rims and tires on it, that I got from my grandfather. My dad said the rims/tires were on an M that my grandfather had bought in 70"s but were switched over to the H when he bought new 38 inch tires. Was this an option from IH? Every H I"ve seen has always had 38 inch rims.

all '39 h's and m's came with 36" rear tires. the wheel companies didn't come out with 38" rims until sometime in'40.

My understanding is that the 36 inch rims were on all 39's, possibly some 40's. If anyone has an original 39 H or M with 38's, please say so. I believe once IH began using 38's they did not put 36's on factory tractors -- I am not positive about that, that is simply what I remember, and in 1939 I was only 1 year old, and I darn sure don't remember that.

36" were optional, and were more common on earlier tractors.

Some of the early Hs and Ms did come on 36 inch rubber. If you look through an original parts manual for these tractors you will find that there are many, many, options, several different configurations of steel wheels and quite a few options on rubber tires. Most of us consider the 38 inch rear tires to be standard, but when you study the subject in depth you will find that there is no such thing as standard.
