been working on a ih 300u. finally started it today. it keeps blowing the flow control valve retainer for the power steering sky high, along with alot of fluid. any ideas as to what is causing this would be very helpful.
thanks,

i am not sure how to post a picture.
this is the block next to the reservoir for the hydro fluid under the seat. the block next to it has the handle for the hydraulics, by the right fendser. i am busy now checking the screen that is screwed in the block. the screen and the orfice seems fine and clean.
stumped again.

I'm not sure but I believe the person who owned the power steering unit on my tractor before me had the same problem, their should be a snap ring that holds the spool down, well apparently it wasn't working so somebody made an L shaped steel plate that bolts on the top and side of the valve that holds the seal retainer and spool in place(kinda scary to drill and tap into a valve) if your interested in seeing a picture let me know and I'll try to figure out how to post it on this site

Ditto on the pictures. You are lucky the pump is that good. Hate to say it but most of the "older" IH hydraulic systems leave something to be desired.

Help us help you with some pictures.
The best I can do is to tell you that the pressure relief valve may not be operational, Or the valve that is comming apart may have a defective, worn, or missing component that allows it to come apart under normal pressure. If the main relief valve is stuck it will destroy more than that if not repaired. Make sure all remote valves, hitch valves and controls are in neutral. It should not produce over pressure.
