My Farmall B w/ a belly mower keeps over heating. Is there anything that could be fixed or adjusted to keep it from overheating, or is it just the nature of the beast and I just need to keep an eye on the water level? Any suggestions are welcome.

most likely its sludge and rust,,but keep in mind timing can change the operating temp of an engine if it is out far enough

Chances are the block is blocked at the base of the sleeves as there are small holes the size of a nickle where the water comes thru to the radiator. I would pull the radiator and the lower housing on the block then using compressed air and water get the junk out of those holes. You can see in there with the lower outlet off. mite want to back flush also. It is not uncommon to find sludge deep in this area when replacing the sleeves. You can also add a water pump easy as it will bolt on where the lower housing is now and just add a longer belt. Just be sure to get a pump with a pulley as some do not come with pulley. The pump is tyhe same as used on SCs

I would say it needs a good flushing. You wouldn't belive what will flush out of one of these old girls. I got about 2 gal. of what looked like mud out of my Super c when I flushed the block.Short of hard plowing I have never got a Farmall hot enough that you couldn't lay your hand on the radiator cap and it would just be warm.

the b has a thermosiphon non pressurized cooling system. there is no water pump. i have a b with a 5 ft woods belly mower. it will occasionally boil over if you are moving sideways on a ditch. seems like a slug of air gets up in the head and then burps out. try flushing the cooling system. any auto parts store sells a cleaner you pour in the radiatior and let it idle for 15 min or so to get all the rust and lime out. i have been using distilled water with the antifreeze instead of tap water to cut down on the lime build up.

What symptoms of overheating are you seeing? Most of the time when somebody thinks they are overheating, they aren't.

Not sure if this is a pressurized system or not?
Loose radiator cap (gasket bad or radiator port bent and cap not sealing)... clogged water lines - thermostat - water pump... radiator needs flushing or fins need cleaned... that's about all I can think of that could be wrong.
