IHC 234 PTO Problem

I am borrowing an IHC 234 from a friend. I was rototilling and all of a sudden the pto rotates, but grinds while under a load. Is this a "common" problem? Where should I look first. I work on heavy equipment for a living, but have never worked on something this small. Is this something best left for somebody who has experience with these machines or is this something I will most likely be able to find parts for and be able to tackle in a weekend?

Thanks

i have two of the ihc 234 tractors. i assume you are talking about the compact 234 with the dsl motor.you need to check out the problem SOON! the parts for the little tractors are costly and some times hard to find.the tractors were made by mitsubihi.good little tractors but they were made during the case ih transition years so some times parts are rare.give me a holler if you need anything else..... .....barry

I have a 404 and it had a similar problem about two months ago. I would investigate before running the PTO again.

On mine, two pins and four bolts had broken that internally hold the PTO housing together. I couldn't even find a couple of the bolts so I think someone worked on it before but did a poor job.

Removing the PTO was not too complicated. A manual helps but all you really do (on mine anyway) is remove four bolts and pull it straight out. But to get to it, you have to remove some of the 3-point hitch. Again, not too hard. Put something under the opening to catch hydraulic fluid. When you get inside, it should be obvious where the problem is. I used a tap to remove the pins and broken bolts. Then I made new pins from 3/8 shoulder bolts and put it all back together.

The grinding came from an aluminum gear getting chewed up by the steel differential gear. Bad news. Mind wasn't too bad so I put it back in and it's running fine. The gear doesn't mesh, it simply interlocks, so a little wear shouldn't hurt. Don't wait too long to replace it though.

I finished it in about four hours plus a trip to the store for bolts and hydraulic fluid. If your gasket tears on removal, you will need to order a new one, make one, or maybe use permatex.

Hope this helps.
