My Farmall A has the old "Stop/white/green" type oil pressure gauge. She runs in the "green" at startup, then slowly moves to center of gauge when she`s heated up. I"m just wondering if anyone knows what pressure is actually represented by "center gauge", "green", "stop", ect. Thanks for all comments (even the sarcastic ones if they show up :-)

I’d just like to add to the other good comments is that the A has the thermo-siphon cooling system. If this system is plugged or not cooling correctly and you have light oil in it that could result in lower than normal oil pressure. You might want to give the cooling system an once-over while your checking out the other ideas.

This might be a dumb question, but are you sure you are looking at the oil pressure gauge? To me, it sounds like you are looking at the coolant temperature gauge. The oil pressure gauge, if original, should only have the word oil in the center and a red zone on the left and white zone right of the red zone. The dealer replacements have numbers instead of colored zones. Assuming that the two gauges have the same insides with a different face, the right end of the red zone would be 75 psi. All the way to the left would be zero. Correct me if I am wrong about this, as I have never seen a green, white, and red oil pressure gauge before.

Use a master (calibrated) gauge to test the one you have. Most mecahnics have one, so do hydraulic shops. My guess would be in the area of 35-40# at center of gauge. JimN

I don't know the answer to your question, but most of the older tractors run on the low side unless they have been recently overhauled. You could most likely improve your oil pressure by rebuilding your oil pump. I put a new bottom plate, pressure bypass spring and plunger in my BN and it made a big difference. The bottom plate is expensive ($100 or so) and you may be able to hone your old one and reuse it. Dave
