Stiff brake/clutch pedal on Farmall A

I have two Farmall "A"s and I have the same problem with both. You can hardly push down
on the brake pedals or the clutch pedal. Some
one told me that there were four Zerk fittings
for lubricating the pivot shaft for these pedals. I can' find any grease fittings. There
are two capscrews that hold the cover in place
where the shaft is. I thought they might be where the Zerks ought to be. They don't have a
tapered thread for a grease fitting though. Am I
stupid, or what? Thanks,
Tom

The A did not have any zerks so thats a good reason you could not find any. Take the pedal gaurd loos then you can spray with wd-40 or something then oil later there are no bushings just cast pedal on steel rod. Have you greased the thro-out bearing thru the hole? That mite make the clutch push easier.

Thomas: It's time you had a manual. In the Farmall 130 manual it is on page 38, illustrtion 38E. The same diagram is in every manual for A, SA, 100, 130 and 140. It shows 4 grease fittings on the clutch and brake pedals shaft, one at each brake pedal, one where clutch pedal turns on brake shaft and the 4 one where brake shaft comes out the left side. That is exactly how every offset Farmall from 1939 to 1979 was equiped.

Hi Tom, Yep, there are grease fittings down there. I believe there are even holes in the guard to allow access to them. You might try removing the guard for a closer inspection. If I recall the grease fitting is right in the pedal casting itself. When I was rebuilding my Super A the right brake pedal had a badly worn bore, which I removed and rebored and installed a bushing. After I did that I had to redrill the zerk tapped hole back out to get through the new bushing wall :")

I have 2 super a's and 1 has zerks and the other does not. 1952 has them and the 1948 does not. Not all have them. i have had it completely apart. I do not know when they added them but i can tell you the 1948 has never had them on my tractor. guard does not have the holes like the 1952.

Just wanted to chime in, not trying to be smart.

scotty,

just wondered if it really is, i think i have read of others that have older tractors with zerks.

I could be wrong. I frequently am.

I have an "A" right pedal and bracket that does NOT have the grease fitting. There is no provision for it in the casting. I got it at a salvage yard to use while I had the orignal one on my 100 bored out and bushed. I'm betting the early "A's" didn't have them. You might have to tear them down and have oillite bushings put in to solve the problem once and for all.
