Saturday at the County fair the fan assembly decided to wear out on my Farmall A. While I had the radiator off I decided to check the governor for wear and noticed that a few pieces were missing. I compared the manual to the actual piece and it looks like the spring on the end of the shaft is gone. Could this be a problem? Can anybody give me some info on a governor? Thanks

Mornin Russell, The spring that pushes the central shaft outward to the end of the housing will occassionally break. That can be replaced, and while doing so order yourself a new set of thrust washers also. These things self destruct after many years. You also might check how much slop you have on the speed control lever that goes into that housing on the side, I ended up making a new shaft along with reaming that bore to a uniform size.

What do you mean by slope? I do know that the speed control lever is very worn. How can I replace it? I do not know anything about a governor. Thanks

I make the hole 5/8 then use a 5/8x1/2 brass bushing they are like new when finished sure makes a difference in throttle response.

Russell, Slop, not slope / :")

Slop, a worn condition between two parts that do not offer maximum performance. OK, enough sarcasm :")

Bring the govenor housing and speed contol lever to your local machine shop and have them remachine the housing to get the proper fit between those parts.
