Thanks to Jim N and Hayfarmer my post at 9 CDT was quickly answered and the governor problem and dwell tach were operating as prescribed by noon. Problem was the two adjusting screws (speed and idle stop) were way off the marks. Now "Emma" as in "emma going to make it " is purring like a kitten at idle ( 425 rpm)and roaring like a lion at high speed. 1600 rpm no load). Oil was good (all over the floor) and the bell crank right on the money. Now the dwell. Can't find a spec for this anywhere. It looks like I have about 60 degrees. Anyone got a setting and a reference book? Never did like the feeler gage method.

While I am unaware of what your proper thanks setting should be, I concur with Wayne as to the dwell setting.

Well wright off the top of my head i can not think of it as i have always set points with a feeler gauges even the double points in race cars and have been on the money when checked on the strobe it is a feel thing when using a feeler gauges , just like a valveset your feel and mine will not be the same . your S/MTA and my S/MTA will run differant . as mine runs at 1970-5 RPM wide open and has only 27-28 degrees total ing. timming and makes 58.5 HP. my buddys S/MTA turns the re about the same RPM and has the same ing. timming but his make over 90 HP . differant pistons head and manifold and one of my home brew carb set ups .

Dwell should be about 60 degrees for a 4 cylinder. Dwell for an engine theoretically is 360 / # of cyliders times 2/3. Dwell time (points closed) should be 2 times as long as points open time.
IE: 360 /4 x 2/3 = 60, 360 / 6 x 2/3 = 40, 360 / 8 x 2/3 = 30.
