I'm restoring a '44 Model H that rolled into the barn but while sitting on blocks, the right rear axel locked up (only about 1/16" forward/back rotation). Other than putting it on blocks, draining the oil out of the trans and removing the pedals, I havn't done anything to it. I've moved the shifter rails with a screwdriver, but no help. I'd appreciate any ideas about what caused it to lock up and any suggestions on where to start to fix it.

One more note, the bull gear runs in a cutout in the bearing housing on the end of the pinion gear (brand drum). if you need to remove that houfing, it is necessary to remove the bull gear first.

I thank you all for the help. Looks like check the brake band first... then pull the pto and look in there for extra parts.
Thanks

I would caution not to force it, it can break the housing. I hope it is the brake band, and not a bearing part. Pulling the PTO might allow enough room to feel the bottom of the bull gears.

If you drained the rear end, a ball from a broked race might have gotten under the bull gear. Did you get any spare parts or filings out of the rear end when you drained it? H's kinda like to wear out the bearings on the axes and brakes and drop a ball or two once in a while. They will NOT go between the bull gear & the bottom of the housing, I've seen 'em break the housing when a ball tried to fit through there. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Remove the brake cover on the side that is stuck and have a look. With the brake pedals removed, there is nothing to keep the brake band released. The band may have rusted to the drum.
