Just bought a late model 400 at auction. The t/a works, but seems to slip easily when any load is put on drive train. For instance, if I start off in 1st gear, low t/a, it will pull. But, if I start off in 4th gear, low t/a, it will slip. Is this a t/a problem or is it the t/a clutch that's slipping.

Bad news JD guy,The T/A clutch is disengaged when T/A handle is back or in low T/A. So if tractor stops and no wheel spin the T/A is out or main clutch slipping. Most times it makes a whining noise whan tractor stops if T/A is not working, As another posted if T/A is good and T/A clutch is slipping the tractor would slow down to low T/A speed but keep going. The only T/A adjustments are for the clutch and in low T/A it don't matter if its there or not. So if yours won't pull in low and you want to fix it,its time to take it out and see what it needs.

"Late" model 400? They were offered only 1955-1956.(like the 200,300).

First I'd try adjusting the TA linkage before condeming the TA. My daughters 460 would do the same thing until I adjusted it. David

Hello
When ta lever is back low side if tractor won't pull the ramp in the ta is slipping. If ta is forward this direct drive and if clutch is slipping it will be pulling in low or same as ta back.
