The oil bath air cleaner is the best there is. Service it regularly and forget it.

You don't even have to service it regularly unless you are working the tractor. You probably found it with an inch or more of dirt in the bottom. I don't service ones I work very often and cannot generate much sludge in the bottom so the ones with a lot went many years with no servicing and were still cleaning the air! They do not wear out.

On a hobby tractor, or parade tractor, once per year is plenty often enough.

They are the best air filter ever made, and were only eliminated due to manufacturing cost. The big companies save money putting an inferior paper filter in and cost you every time you change it.

I think the owners manual says to clean the cup daily. Back on the farm, we did it weekly-typically 60 hours if we ran every day. Quarter to half inch of dirt in the bottom, but I bet it still worked.

maybe you don't understand how it works. The oil does not filter the air. What the oil does is wash the dirt out of the permenent steel mesh filter that is above it. As the oil cup gets filled with dirt you simply clean it and add new oil. One of the best filters ever made.

I wouldn't try it. The air cleaner is designed to force the dirt through the oil to the bottom of the cup, thus it sticks to the bottom and to itself pretty well. Although many small engine air cleaners do use foam, they do not work in the same way.
