I installed a Delco 10SI alternator in my Farmall 230 following the schematic for a Farmall Super M. The schematics are great; very easy to follow.

I did not install the WARNING LIGHT, but did install the BALLAST RESISTOR.

When the ignition is shut off the engine does keep on running!

I took the BALLAST RESISTOR out of the line but the result is the same. The engine keeps on running when the ignition is shut off.

However, when I disconnect the (+) wire from the IGNITION COIL the engine stops running immediately.

Evidently I have wired it correctly as the AMMETER
shows that the engine is charging when it is running.

Where did I go wrong? Que pasa?

Many thanks,

Bud Nolan

From posts I've seen here on the forum to other folks with the problem you noted, an IN4003 or like diode placed in the wire running between the #1 terminal on the Delco alternator and the ignition switch will elminate your problem. The banded end of the diode must be toward the alternator. This diode can easily be found at Radio Shack. Hope this helps. Hal

The alternator is backfeeding to the coil, you need to install a diode to prevent this. Search the articles on this site on 12 volt conversions and you will find where to install it.

You may not be connected to the correct terminal on your ignition switch or if it is the switch is probably defective. There should only be voltage
present on that terminal when the switch is in the on or run position. You are still feeding voltage to the coil when it keeps on running with the switch in the off position. Check that terminal with a volt meter when switch is off. Hal
