Bolt holes on new manifold much larger

Just got my new manifold for my H. Noticed the mounting holes are drilled out to 7/16" and the two outer holes are drilled to 1/2". My studs are 3/8" so there's a lot of play there. Also, the carb mount holes are larger and elongated. My old one had 5/16" studs. Did the later H models and 300's have larger studs? Anyone else notice this with a new manifold?
Thanks

Early H heads used 3/8 inch studs.

As a matter of fact,I just installed one of those manifolds on my 41 H.The manifold is made for use on Super H,300 AND 350 TRACTORS AS WELL,WHICH HAVE BIGGER CARBS ON THEM.Thats the reason for the slotted holes. My head had 7/16NF studs in it,so I had no problems mounting it or making it work.Someone must have drilled and tapped 3/8 into your head.

Just checked my parts book. They list one stud for tractors up to SN 106907 and another for 106908 and up. I think mine is original and my SN is 6X,XXX so it looks like they went to 7/16 after 106907.

That would make sense. My tractor was a kerosene tractor originally, the casting code on my head has it cast in 1948,which means the low compression kerosene head was replaced, hence the bigger studs. That is one of the very few castings that isn't original. You should still be OK,use hardened flat washers and lock nuts on it,if you feel keeping it tight is a problem.

I believe they are that way to insure they will fit over the studs and makes up for any dimension drawings due to different languages. As far as the elongated holes for mounting the carb, you will appreciate them rather than having something not fit.

Yeah.. I helped friend install new non slotted manifold on H last year, when we tried to mount carb holes would not come close to lining up. We used grade 8 1/4 inch bolt in one side of carb for a temporary fix worked fine and do not know if he ever did anything different.
