We need to know the route for the gas line on our F-14. The gas tank has two holes in the bottom (1/4" pipe thread) and one in the front of the top (1/8" pipe thread). Why two holes in the bottom. Is the hole in the top for a return from the carb?

Fawteens pic is good but the hole in the bottom of tank thatis not in the center just takes a plug. the sediment bowl has an inlet for the gsa start if it is a dual fuel. The hole at the top is not a hole at all its only a place to change directions an make connections for the fuel line. Look at that top hole to see that its not a hole just some threads.

The top hole is the return to give the fuel somewhere to go when the float is closed on the carb. This prevents the pump from forcing open the float and flooding. Some dual fuels have a small tank on the hood. The ones I have seen, mine included,do not have a sedimnt bowl on the big tank, but just a shutoff. My sediment bowl is on the fuel pump.

Thanks for the information. We've been wondering about the return line and your explanation clears it up. We now have the parts to have a valve on the bottom of the tank and the connections to run a return line.

Yes, the line in to the top is a return.

Two holes in the bottom indicates that you probably have a kero model with a small tank in the rear of the main tank for gas to start and get it hot, and then switch over to kero for run. Does it have two fuel caps? Most folks just run gas, as kero no longer has the price advantage it did when the tractor was built.

The picture is slightly different, as it is for a W-12 with the small fuel tank for gas located in the hood, but the routing is essentially the same and shows how the return is plumbed in.

Ours has only one cap. From what I can see, it is a single tank for gasoline. We have a parts tractor that has a tank with two filler caps and this is not like it. Should we put a sediment bowl at the tank that has a shut-off in it? Obviously we can run lines but we are also interested in making the tractor as original as possible.

In that case, I would treat one as a drain and plug it off, and put a valve and line in the other.

The sediment bowl and fuel strainer screen are part of the fuel pump, as others have mentioned.
