IH 424 -- throttle problem, need some help

I have a 1966 IH 424 utility -- it's been a good work tractor since I bought it three years ago. I was using it today with a post hole digger when it dropped from 3/4 throttle to idle. I thought something might be wrong with the linkage, but it was still attached. Moving the throttle lever only changes the rpms very slightly. When the problem first occured (it was sudden with no warning), moving the throttle lever to the idle position cause a rattling sort of sound. This sound stopped.

I noticed that the throttle linkage doesn't attach to the carb but, rather, heads toward the hydraulic pump (I think). I need some advice on what and where to look in order to get things operational again. It still runs fine (at idle speed) and everything else seems to work fine.

Thanks!!

Darryl

After overnight thinking, have a helper watch the governor to throttle[ on carb] operating rod as you run the throttle lever through it's range. At minimum throttle, the rod should be near it's closed position. As throttle lever is advanced, you should see the rod move smoothly towards fast or wide open position. This is all done with engine off. If throttle rod doesn't move as it should, governor problems might be causing your symptoms. Possible problems might be a broken spring or shaft in the governor- or bearings on the governor shaft. Check the throttle plate & screws first.

The governor spring is broken.

I wouldn't use the tractor until you take the carb off & visually inspect the throttle plate to see if it is loose on the throttle shaft. Sounds like the screws which hold the throttle plate on the shaft have worked loose & possibly one or both of them may be lying in the bottom of the carb. Try removing the air cleaner to carb air hose & take a look to see if anything is in that area.
