I have a Super H that has a 8 volt battery on it. Battery is shot and I need to replace it. What are my options? Can I still go back to 6 volt? Or has the system been modified and I need to stick with 8volt?

If you now have an 8v batt and it is shot just replace it with another as you dont know whether someone has played with the system.

I have a question about my 1950 Farmall Cub.
Sometime in the past my cub was converted to a 12volt system and it works ok but every time I wont to do some thing with it I have to carry a 12 volt battery with me. I would like to put my antique back to origional and be able to use a crank. I have no knowledge of electrical terms or what wire goes where, can anyone help me?

Sounds like its wired wrong and the first thing you need to do is figure out what drains the battery. By the way you can still hand crank it even with it haveing a battery ignition system on it. If the battery has enough power to say work the light if it has them but not enough to turn the engine over it has the power to run the tractor if you hand crank it. BTDT a good number of time

Useing an 8 volt battery is a bandade fix for other problems. You tractor should work just fine on 6 volts but may need some TLC to get it back up and running on 6 volts. As John says if you need to go with a bigger/higher voltage battery go to 12 volt and do it right or not at all

Tod, Im NO fan of the 8 volt system. They are an oddball and the availability of batterys plus how high rated they are is questionable. If one insisit on converting voltages, they ought to go ahead n do it right and convert to the full standard 12 volt system and be done with it.

An H ought to start fine with a good 6 volt system so if you wanna stay at 6 I recommend use of the biggest heaviest highest Amp/Hr or CCA battery you can buy that will physcally fit into the compartment. Also I recommend use of 00 gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables for faster cranking.

As far as electrical modifications from 8 back to 6 volts, if it has the simple 2 wire Cutout Relay System or the Voltage Regulator that only had a "current control" relay (2 coil VR) and no voltage controller I DOUBT ANY CHANGES WERE MADE OR ARE NOW NEEDED. However, if it had a Voltage Regulator that had the seperate Voltage Control Relay (often a 3 coil VR) it could have been tweaked up to better charge at 8 volts and may need readjusted.

Although it would have been best (to extend point life) I doubt any external ballast resistance was ever added to the coil if its a coil ignition instead of a mag, but if so that would need removed if you go back to 6 volts.

Basically, throw in a good heavy duty 6 volt battery and use at least 0 or better yet 00 Gauge Battery n Starter n Ground Cables and no electrical mods are necessary if its a Cutout Relay system and youre off to the races. In the event she cranks slow, I would have the starter tested.

I am pretty sure that an 8 volt battery is still available, although your chosen supplier may not have one in stock. Changing the tractor back to a 6 volt would be easier. It is possible that the voltage regulator has been tweaked just a bit in order to keep the 8 volt battery at full charge, but in most cases this was not done. It should be as easy as buying a new 6 volt battery and dropping it in.

Most people put 8 volt batteries in place of a 6 volt, because their starters need the have the armature cleaned and new brushes, need heavier or better battery cables. You can put a 6 volt back in, but, depending on what shape your starter is in and what kind of battery cables you use or connections, it may turn slower than what you get now.
