I have got the scrapmetal H running and driving, and it is time to do final carb adjustments. I have got it running decently sitting still. I had to clean all the crud out of the carb as it was plugged solid in the passageway before the needle and seat...Somewhere around two turns out for the idle mix, and the main mixture on the bottom is around two and ahalf turns out. FLoat level set like it said in the kit. Much of the running problem was the points, as I expected, as it has a 12 Volt battery in it and nobody bothered with a 12 volt coil. Got them cleaned up and it smoothed right out. It really doesn't run bad for a machine that was locked up for a few years.

HOWEVER..... I can't get it to run down the road in high gear. Which tells me power is still lacking. Any of you H professionals who want to let loose of your carb tuning secrets, I am all ears. As long as I stay out of high gear it starts right away, and runs well. I haven't put any implements on or dragged anything with it yet to see what it will do working.

Also.. The temp gage has not moved very far from cold. I think it is shot. DO H's normally stay on cold unless actually doing work?

Forgive my newbie questions, I normally run a 454 or one of the fleet of grey tractors.

So just how are trying to start to get it road speed? If trying to start from 5th at a dead stop,you dont have a problem.Start off in 4th and quick shift to 5th before it has a chence to stop.I usually pull out the driveway in 4th then quickly go to 5th and ease out the clutch and away I go.

The idle jet needle on some engines is a joke. I've never gotten much of a reaction with it on any engine. I had to clean the carb on my Cub the other day and inadvertenly left the needle on the bench. It ran as good as ever. Couple of hours later I found it laying there and put it in. I hope I set it right!

RCUBED, if adjusting the idle mix screw makes no difference, or if the screw is gone completely and the engine still runs good, there can be only one reason, the carburetor is still very dirty inside, and the idle passages are plugged up.

Initial setting is 2.5-3 turns out. It needs to be set as lean as possible, yet still give good performance. With the engine at operating temperature and with the throttle lever wide open, turn the main screw in until the engine begins to run rough, then out until smooth. Don't turn the screw out more than about 1/2 turn from that setting, none or 1/4 turn is probably better. You can set the idle mixture the same way, but with the throttle closed. Set the idle speed first, usually about as low as it will go without dying. Adjust the idle screw in or out until smooth, reset the speed to suit. Then open the throttle rapidly, the engine should accelerate without hesitation. If not repeat the entire process until it does. If it refuses, you have another problem that mixture adjustment won't fix.

The lack of power could possibly be due to the ignition timing being too slow. Try advancing the distributor a little bit at a time until you are satisfied. Or, with tractor sitting still, and the engine running, pull the throttle all the back and then advance the timing until the engine has nice, steady hum too it. It's hard to describe in words and print, but when the timing is right the engine will just sound like it is running free and easy, not laboring at all.

I had to put a thermostat in my "H" to get it to warm up a bit.

I believe your temp gauge is working just fine.
You need to put a load on it to move that gauge even well into the "run" area. I've never had mine run hot.

Recognize that the idle mixture is an air bleed, screwing in richens it.

With the tractor wide open, open the main jet until you just see a little black smoke, then turn in 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

Under heavy load, open 1/2 to 1 turn.

I think you"ve got the main jet set too tight. It runs ok until it needs more gas for fifth gear.

Correct. The main jet, or load adjustment screw, is to be turned out a full 3 turns for the initial setting, a full 4 turns out will not hurt a thing.
