Got the sweetcorn in yesterday. This was a sod feild last spring before plowing and prepping for sweetcorn. I had a good crop and very good weed kill with the neighbors left over spray, stunted the corn a little, but really knocked out the weeds. I would like to hit the grass that is coming up now before the corn emerges. Can I do this? What should I use. I will cultivate later on if needed. Or do I need to wait and spray when the corn is up?

Read the spray label, it is a binding legal document and will answer all your questions.

The above disclaimer being noted, it all depends on the herbicide you are going to use. Some have residual and will attach to the soil particles remaining active for a time, some will only work on “contact” or kill weeds that are already up. If it has residual it may injure the corn as it emerges though the soil, especially if it injured it after it was up last year. (The label will tell you if it is a residual or not.)

If it is a contact only spray and the corn is still below the ground it won’t be affected by the herbicide.
