I'm looking at a 1940 H.

What do the letters FBH mean in the serial number?

Thanks for your help,
Bill

FAA = Farmall A
FAB = Farmall B
FBH = Farmall H
FBK = Farmall M

I think the A and B in the middle have to do with "frame styles." Notice both "A" types are frameless tractors with external final drives, while the "B" types have full frames and internal final drives. The A and B may stand for something, or they might be arbitrary designations.

The REAL mystery is why the M is "FBK" instead of "FBM." I have a theory that the M was originally going to be called the K, but they changed their minds at the last minute. Changing decals was a lot easier than changing serial tags.

The three letters together are IH's prefix that designates the serial number as that of a Farmall H. The individual letters by themselves mean nothing.

Just that it is a Farmall H, I don't think anyone knows what the B means.
