Looking at a 1939 Farmall H, s/n 4570 that a guy has for sale. It's a bit of a paperweight hulk but this guy claims it's somewhat rare because the cast iron differential cover has a seat support slot cast into it and also it has the shift pattern also showing. In addition, it has the underbelly hydraulic pump underneath there somewhere. He claims that Farmall collectors are always on the lookout for these early models. Is he feeding me a line or what? Is it worth getting into because of this so-called" rarity?

In the grand scheme of the 300,000+ Farmall Hs built from 1939 through 1953, a 1939 is "rare," but not rare like a Mickey Mantle rookie card or anything like that.

It's an interesting find, a conversation piece, something to brag about, but not worth its weight in gold, if that's what you're looking for. I wouldn't may much extra for a '39 in average condition over any other year.

Personally, I would like a '39 and one of the last '53s, painted up, with the right decals, so you could sit them side by side and see how the tractor evolved over 14 years of production.

CNKS has some good info, now you know that what you are looking at is at least somewhat special. If you can get it bought right and you are looking to restore an H, this one would be one of the more unique ones. You have to decide if that is an advantage to you or if a later model H will satisfy you just as much.

I don't have the production numbers in front of me as I an at the wrong computer. The belly pump hydralics were used until late 1953. The "slot top" transmission cover was used in all 1939 and some 1940 models, I believe. They also had 36 inch tires instead of 38's. To a purist, perhaps a little more valuable, but not what I would call rare. I don't think many people would pay much much of a premium for one. One sold at auction here a while back, I did not attend. It had 36 inch tires, but they were on cutoff originally steel wheels. New paint, I was not impressed with it.
