To all you guys that have had your Farmall gear shift lever come out of a rail without taking it out of gear. Your 50 year old Farmall isn't really so bad. Just think, after 50 years your gear shift lever is worn.

I had this same thing happen today with a relatively new 350 hp New Holland. Luckily they have those designed so you can't get in two gears at once. I could only imagine what would happen if you got that baby in two gears and dropped the clutch. For those who don't know these have two H shift pattern gear boxes, one 4 speed and the other 3 and reverse. About the only progress NH has made, you just have to get the punch down alongside the shift lever. My-my-my, but isn't progress grand.

After a number of years of use , I believe that MY gearshift lever is not suffering so much from wear as it is the possibility that the construction material of said gearshift is undergoing a transformation. It would appear that as wear (age) increases, there is a possibility that the gearshift seems to become more flexible. I assume that this apparent flexibility would be a design flaw; however upon detailed research, a change of transmission appears to remedy the perceived loss of rigidity.... like going from a 4 speed to a 6 speed; or a Clark to a Roadranger; or from a 5X4 to an 18 speed airsplit double over, without having to double or even triple clutch!!!!! ! Now about Allison automatics..... ..Like I said, perceived.....QR..

Hello Hugh Havent seen you post much in a while my H is nearing completion,just have sheet metal left to get on and also my three point hitch is left.Anyway in regards to your comment about progress,I had the oppertunity to deal with some of this progress at work today.What used to be a simple diagnostic and repair on the autofeed on a vermeer chipper has turned into an absolute nightmare to diagnose.Had to talk to vermeers service man all day long on the phone trying to get a copy of updated service manual and wiring diagram.Not one of the hydraulic valves are mechanically operated all of them are servo operated and if a single one of them goes out your talking about three hundred dollars to replace.Some progress! Well maybe for their pocket books anyway. PROGRESS STINKS RIVER BOTTOM FARMER

Stan: I would have expected you to ask me, what happened to the Deere. Here is how it works, I worked these two big tractors so hard, they give me rotation so the tractors can have a rest. Just think all this relatively new iron, and an old buck like me having one H@## of a time.

Things haven't changed in the past 65 years. I'm always saying I've never seen the perfect tractor, yet each manufacturer has at least one feature I like. I like the Deere transmission best, NH hydraulics I luke better. I don't think either engine has as much torque as they should have. Both these tractors had 8- 20.8x42 Firestone radials. Traction was never a problem. Both were lacking enough engine. I think that big block Deere 9300 you tried would be a better tractor.

My prehistoric Case VAC will sometimes go into two gears at the same time. Fortunately I was able to fix it by chipping away the cast iron above the low/reverse shift rod and welded a vertical ear on it. Now when it happens I can push it back in neutral with my toe without even dismounting. Would have junked this thing years ago but it has new rear tires!
