The gasket for the transmission Cover needs to be replaced before painting. After removing all 22 bolts, it is still tight. There remains the four 1/2 inch threaded studs that appear to still be holding it down. What is the secret. Also, are the gaskets available?

Use a 1/2" nut. I started out using a couple of flat washers under it. When I run out of threads, I added more washers. When they started spinning, I used a pry bar to remove them the rest of the way. Real easy.

Mine was stuck after I had all the bolts/nuts off too. Had to take an old wood chisel that I use for a scraper and tap it in on either side of those studs to pop it loose. It was corroded to the studs, plus the original gasket is very thin paper and the top was sort of "glued" to the transmission case all the way around.

To get those studs out,get a nut the size of the threads and run them down.Keep going and the stud will come out,or thats the way they are suppose to work anyways.Ive had a couple spin, but if they do spin then you can pry them out.

I had the cover off of mine several years ago - if I remember right the 4 studs are just smooth studs that fit into the holes - no threads on the bottom side. I don't why the top is threaded. As for the gasket I couldn't get one so I bought some gasket material in a tube from NAPA - can't remember what it was. It worked fine. I just scraped off the exces when it dried.

Yes the cover slides over those. I take a scribe and wire brush to the studs to make sure every thing on the top side is clean. After a few days and a few sprays of penetrant I noodle around the cover with a thin putty knife. Then starting around the stud area pry with a thin bar and work it off evenly. I made the cover gaskets in pieces(it's big and thin)and use small amount of silcone gasket maker at the joints.
Good luck.
