Bought a fixer upper H the other week.

I removed the shifter last nite as it is stuck in 2nd gear.

what did I find?

A mountain of dust and rust where the underside of my shifter used to be.

Previous owner had removed the original pin, and pounded in some make shift pin. Lord knows what alloy... It COMPLETELY ate the ball joint away and left an anthill of dust below it.

I am worried that the same alloy may have tainted the gears below.

Going to get a shop vac, and try to suck all that corrosive dust pile outta there. Then soak in WD-40 and put a new shifter in there with the CORRECT pin. And hopefully all will be better.

Wow, I never would have guessed that could happen. Was there just a pin in place or both the pin and cylinder? When I rebuilt my H I found someone had replaced the pin wit a hardened bolt - but no damage like you describe. If you need a new shifter, I think I have one sitting around.
