H starting problems

The H on the farm I work on will not always start with the starter button. Frequently it needs to be pulled or rolled down the hill. The battery is not very old (couple Years). The lights work when it is running, The guage reads a postive charge when it is running. Most of the time it barely has enough juice in it to turn over. I could use some info on what connections to check, what should voltages be at certain places, or whatever information you may have for me...Thanks

Butch

The starter switch itself could be bad. I've replaced more than one of those.

I had an H that did the same thing.
Had the mag rebuilt and it started everytime.

I would use 00 cables for 6 volt system. Solder the ends and make sure all connections are clean
(shiny) and tight. Hal
PS: Put a volt meter across the battery terminals
and see what your charging voltage is with the new cables. Should be around 7.25 to 7.5vdc.

For a 6 volt system you should have 6 or just a hair more at the battery, no load. With the starter engaged you should have about 5.5 volts at the starter and coil.

For a 12 volt system double the above except for the coil which should still have 5.5 if it has the external resistor or 11 if it is a 12 volt coil or has the internal resistor.

Other connections to check are where the nose cone and end cap connect to the field housing on the starter. These carry the current to ground.

I do believe your problem lies in the battery cables. Stout cables and solid connections are the biggest point of contention on a 6V system.

Depending on where you are located in Wisconsin...I have a set of 1 gauge battery cables with soldered ends that will fit an H? Does your H have the starter switch mounted on the steering post, or the foot switch? You are welcome to em if you would like. I built two sets since I had the extra cable laying around, but the first set should last at least as long as the tractor, and I would like to see em put to good use.

Billy

Check both ends of the battery cables, make sure there clean brite and tite. Also if the cables are the auto type cables replace them with the right size cables. The auto type are #4 and theres just not enough cable to carry the heavy amps needed to turn over a 6 volt starter. You need 0 or bigger cables on 6 volt systems. If that doesn't work then you probably have a weak/bad starter and its drawing to many amps and not letting the distutor have enough to fire the plugs at the same time.

Sounds like you need to check your connections, especially your ground. If it is still 6 volt, clean and tight connections are even more important. Take a wire brush and clean where the ground bolts to the bell housing and where your starter mounts. Lower compression will also make it harder to start, but it sounds to me like you need to take a couple of hours and replace or at least clean and tighten your battery cables. How big is your ground cable?

forget about my comment on compression, that doesn't have anything to do with your situation, your trouble is the speed of your starter right?

It is a 6V, I think the ground is a flat braided type of cable.

Butch, I would go to an auto parts store and buy a foot of the largest cable that they have, then put you some ends on, and install it in place of that braided cable. TSC does sell the braided cable, and it probably is just as good if not better than the large cable, but I prefer the large cable, what ever you do, just make sure that all of your cables are as short as possible, and your connections are clean bright and tight, just like old says

I had to have my starter rebuilt when that was happening to me.
Now it cranks like crazy.
