Has anyone on here done this with success? My 450 has a crack in the #4 intake runner just above the valve seat. All advice and suggestions welcome.

I have a motor repair manual from the 30's that goes into detail about stitch (plug) welding cracks in blocks and heads, the process has been around for a long time and it is a time proven method.

Did you look at the information at the website I previously posted?

I recently had a 428 Ford block pinned on the water jacket with great success. While at the machine shop, I saw a couple of cylinder heads that had been repaired in the same manner. The machinist told me they have had great success with the pinning process. I would definitely leave it to the professionals however.

Allen does make a good point though. If a replacement head can be found at a reasonable price, I would suggest that...but having it pinned is a viable option. I was a bit skeptical having my block fixed in this manner, but trying to come up with a 428 block is getting tougher and tougher...so I had it pinned. I run that particular car on a 12# cap and have yet to see so much as moisture in the vicinity of the repair.

Good luck!

Billy

Pinning, or taper plugging a crack (not in the combustion chamber) is certainly possible.
If it is junk now, try it, even use an old (but good looking) head gasket to try it out. Digrind the inside to smooth the rough spots. It will be educational even if it fails. Good luck,
JimN

Repairing cracked heads is best left to professionals that do it every day. I believe there is a place in Iowa (I’m sure there are others too) that specializes in repairing cracked heads. To have it done is not cheap though, and rivals the cost of a different head. I’d check with a local machine shop as to the practicality/cost of repairing yours to getting a different one.
