I have acquired a 1950 Farmall Cub gas engine that runs very well for a period of time and then over 3-10 second it sputters and or just stops. I've checked fuel immediate after stop and fuel flows freely to carb. Have checked and reset timing as per manuals. Electrical system is not complete and has a 12v positive ground battery connected. Mag/distributor appears original equip. However, it has a 12v wire direct from the starter solenoid to the distributor. I do not see any resistor in the systen and I know that this was an original 6v system. Could this cause my problems?

I had something similar happen to my 300- I was fine one minute an then the next it would only run at a low idle then die. Opened up the carb, was so dirty that the float only had about a 1/4 inch to move. So, yeah, it's probly the carb

Hi Sonny. If everything else fails, one of my grass mowing cubs had the same exact problems as you're describing, and turned out to be the vent hole in the top of the gas cap was covered/plugged with dirt. Maybe yours has a different style cap than mine, but just in case.

1. Fuel flow TO the carburetor is not the same as fuel flow THROUGH the carburetor. If it can't get through, it can't get to the engine, and the engine will not run.

2. Magneto OR distributor? Not both. Not mag/distributor. 1950 was around the time they started putting distributors, aka battery ignitions, on the tractors, so it probably has a distributor, NOT a magneto.

Since the engine does run, I would NOT start looking at things like the starter, gas cap, or radiator. I would NOT change the oil, check the muffler bearings, tighten the lug bolts, or stir the transmission fluid. The ignition system may not be perfect, but it is good enough to make the tractor run, so LEAVE IT ALONE for now. What I would check is the carburetor. It is probably dirty as all get-out, and needs to be taken apart and cleaned.

Well if it has a mag then it can't had a wire going to the disturtor running off the battery. As far as fuel flow you say it has it to the carb, but does it get in the carb. You need to pull the drian plug from the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good flow there. Also for more help we need to know if its a mag system of it it has a disturtor.
