I need your help again guys. I have a 48 Farmall M. It was starting fine, then the other day I went to start it and it wouldn’t start. At first I though I was flooding the carb, because gas was spitting out the bottom of the carb, so I rebuilt it and still have the same problem. I checked the plugs and they are dry, I tried everything I could think of, it will crank but not turn over.

I need the Farmall Gurus.

Thanks for the help

Kevin

Hey Old, the carb sucked great but it also would blow out. (suck, blow, suck, blow)Is that normal? I wouldn’t think so, do you think I need a new manifold?
Kevin

The carb should only suck, never blow. You have some intake valves sticking or maybe adjusted too tightly

Thanks Rusty, I haven’t touched them since I got the tractor two years ago, can you give me some hints on how to fix it?

Thanks Kevin

You guys are great… It did run and putter for a few seconds after I put gas in the cylinders. Tomorrow I will take the manifold off and see if there is a blockage from the carb to the motor.

Have you checked the intake ahead of the carb for blockage? Also, could be blocked jets in the venturi or blockage after the carb. Never know if something crawled up there and died.

Thanks guy's for all your help.... OK I checked the camshaft it seem fine,I put gas in each cylinder and replaced the spark plugs. That made it want to turn over but then it went back to the same thing. Do you think it could have something to do with the manifold? It’s just not getting gas.

If you put gas in it I would have thought that it would have fired up and run for a couple seconds at least. Are the spark plugs on correctly and the spark timed correctly? To verify, pull the front spark plug and put your thumb over the hole. Crank over the engine until you feel pressure on your thumb. There is a notch in the front pulley that you need to align with the pointer on the front cover. When you get them aligned make sure that the rotor is pointing towards the terminal on the cap that has the spark plug wire going to that cylinder.

The ignition contact points may just be dirty preventing any spark. Drag a dollar bill or other paper through them and see how much dirt you get. The other thing that comes to mind is maybe the cam gear has let go and the camshaft is not turning? I hope not.

A broken wire in your switchbox maybe.

The basics are spark, fuel, compression.

Does it have spark? Is it timed correctly? I see now that it won’t run on ether either, so does it have compression?

I'd try starting it on ether. If it fires keep looking at fuel as the problem.

could be spark then but I'd think the plugs would be getting wet.

Remove the air intake tybe going to thew air cleaner. Put your hand over the end of the carb. Does it suck on your hand and does your hand get gas on it?? If it doesn't suck much you may have a problem with a manifold leak. I've had more then one that woud fire up but when I did that it would fire up and run from thenm on. What the does some times is pull crude out of the fuel system and clears things up

Should blow back out much if any. Sounds like you need to remove the valve cover and check for a valve or 2 that is stuck open. You probably have an intake valve that isn't closeing like it should and thats where you get your blow back

Well first thing is to make sure that is where the problem is. Pull the vavle cover off and then go from there. If you don't have an I-T manual get one and also check the the gap is set right on all the rocker arms when you have the valve cover off. Has this tractor sat for say 2 months or more?? If it has you should probably fill the cylinders with tranny fluid to loosen up the rings and it will also help with the valves.
