pulling H tranny cover, watch the rails?

Hello,
The service guide to my H says a sentence to the effect of, "remove belt pulley attachment if so equipped, then use caution when pulling top cover off transmission, so as not to damage the shifting forks which are attached to the underside"

now...ummmm just how in the heck is that going to work?

I have never opened an H transmission, but I need to as the darn shifter will NOT budge from 2nd gear. Hints, tips, guidance all wonderfully appreciated.

I believe the concern is that the cover is lifted pretty much straight up not drastically more on the front or more easily the rear of the cover. Raising it too much could bend or break a shift fork. As long as you come up reasonably level you shouldn’t have a problem.

You can do two things first. 1. Remove the belt pulley housing, you can see the shifter forks. 2. Perhaps this should be #1: -- Pull the gearshift lever. If neither of those work and you have an engine hoist, you can carefully lift the top cover off without damaging anything. I have removed top covers, but never with the shifter stuck. Just be careful.

thanks,
I shall try knocking out the plugs in the shifter and removing it, just afraid those hole plugs are going to fall down into the tranny when I punch them in.

You don't knock them in. You pry them OUT. There's a pin underneath the plugs which holds the shift lever in place.

If your shifter has a lot of wear, you will need to push down on it fairly hard to get the pin out because the pin will have a grove worn in it. I didn't have a hoist handy when I broke the bull-gear bearing housing trying to pull it out to replace the brake seals????? ? (another story) I removed the cover on my H by prying the cover up just high enough to slip a nut under each corner, then I threaded 12 inch long pieces of all-thread down through the nuts and into the housing. Then use the nuts for jacks to raise the cover evenly. After you clear the shifter rails you can put a couple of long 2x4s on edge, under the cover and slide it to the rear and down. There are some dowel pins in the cover and you need to raise the cover straight up to clear the pins. ken

No, the plugs are just thin metal, you should be able to tap the pin out without a problem.
