I recently bought a Cub and have a few questions. The serial is: 37638, can anyone tell me what year it is? It hasn't been run in at least 10 years, maybe a good many more. After a thorough check of all the fluids and such, and a couple hours of tinkerin' today, it fired up and ran pretty good. The pistons were slightly stuck, and after it was freed up and spinning with the starter, a compression check showed numbers of approx. 15, 30, 40, 85. I feel like the rings are probably sticking in the grooves. It ran decent, didn't even take the carb apart. Let it run for a few minutes, then discovered the raditor is stopped up so had to stop it. Next question, any suggestions how to get out the bolts holding the radiator to the lower casting that are rounded off? I also need a tie rod end, one is broke on the front. Any thoughts on that? To remove the rouded off bolts, go to your local Sears, Autozone, etc. and get some boltouts. They come in sets of different sizes and are a hex socket that is fluted and tapered on the inside to grip damaged bolts. If they are rounded, there is a possibility they are stuck pretty tight. a small 3/8 impact wrench to vibrate them also helps. If you use a torch, becareful, remember the radiator is copper and will melt at a pretty low temperature, and the solder at an even lower temperature.

I recently attempted to remove rounded off bolts on the deck of my Super C. I ground them down flat, drilled a hole and inserted an easeout, tapped like crazy, but to no avail. I figured the two bolts I was trying to remove might take two or three days to accomplish, with untold broken drill bits and easouts. A buddy lent me a set of Craftsman bolt extractors, sort of like a female easout. I snugged the right size on the bolt, tapped it on with a hammer, hit it with the impact wrench and zip! The two bolts came out in the blink of an eye! Nice little tool I'll never be without again.

Your Cub was built in 1948. If you can use a torch to heat those rounded off bolts and then
use a pair of vise grips to try and remove them.
Your local Case/IH dealer may have the tie rod end. Hal
