Rebuilt a D10 off of an H this weekend. To remove the carburetor body gasket, you must remove the pressed in venturi. The venturi in my carb was cracked in numerous places and missing some chunks all together. Since I wasn"t able to remove it, I broke the remaining pieces out and milled the upper carb body flush (no venturi). I finished the complete rebuild and installed on the tractor. Once I made all the adjustments, she runs like a sewing machine, and starts just as quick as you can bump the starter. So what I did seems to have no adverse affects on the operation whatsoever. What have you guys done when you encountered this problem? Does IH still make that venturi?

Thanks!

Billy

You are totally mistaken, the venturi IS NOT PRESSED IN. It simply sits in there. You have just ruined a crucial part of your carburetor, and I know you say it runs OK without it, but I don't believe you. You should have soaked the two halves in carb cleaner overnight, and then just a little gentle persuasion with your hands would have lifted the venturi right up out of the hole. I do not know if the venturi is available from IH, if it is, it is most likely not inexpensive. Also, when separating the top half from the bottom half, gentle care and handling must be used. Most likely you got impatient and then tried to force the two halves apart. That is what broke the venturi.

I wouldn't get on him too hard Loren. Those venturis are aluminum and exposure to moisture and they react with the iron and crumble away. It sounds to me like this is what happened, but no, like you, I can't believe it runs very well.

You are right Cowman...that piece is aluminum, and 60% of that aluminum was gone by the time I acquired this particular tractor. And if that aluminum piece just sits in there, I would hate to see if it was "press fit". It wouldn't come out no way, no shape, no how without risking damage to the upper carb body...thus my decision to chuck it up and mill it smooth. At that point I had nothing to lose.

I gotta tell you though, I spread 11 loads of manure out of a New Idea 219 spreader with the carb this way...and it ran like a champ the entire time...and it was right up to operating temperature.

I just thought I would tag you guys for some input on it. I'm not picking on age, but you boys have been around the block a bit more than my meak 30 years.

Thank you boys!

I have found that desperation or the realization that “It’s junk now, can anything I do make it worse?” makes one try things that have been deemed impossible by many and new discoveries and processes are forthcoming.

I just arc welded (with nickel rod) about a 2” crack between the valves and the spark plug hole on an M head and put it back together with the old head gasket. So far it seems to be holding. How long will it hold? Well, only time will tell for sure, that is why I put in the old head gasket.

I say if it’s junk and you get it working Hurrah!!!! If it’s junk and you didn’t save it, you had cheap (well maybe not) learning experience.

Thanks for passing on your experience.

The Venturi is NLA from IH. If you can make it go with machining, good for you!

Yeah, I just got the "not available" speech from the IH parts guy. I did talk to one of the mechanics though, and he stated that alot of those D10 carbs have the venturi laying in the bottom of the bowl in pieces, and they have been running fine for years that way. He reiterated that if it is properly adjusted you shouldn't experience any hiccups. He also stated that on the 444 gassers and bigger, it does need a venturi installed to run. If it is missing or sized incorrectly, it will create a vacuum leak and not run much above an idle. Just some FYI for you's guys!

Thanks again!

Billy
