This has been asked by others but no answers. A friend has a 47 B #FAB 216351. The engine # is M217617G with FAB under that. On the side below the mag is the word SAMPLE in one inch letters. It also has the mounting area for a hydraulic pump. B"s never came with pumps. What is the significance of these things? A replacement engine? maybe. Check the archives for previous postings for more info but no answers yet. THNX

I have seen the "Sample" referred to before, but don't remember for what (but see my guess below). Your friends B was built at the Louisville plant shortly after it opened. The last A/B chassis serial is 198298 for Chicago and 220829 for Louisville. Very close to the introduction of the C and Super A thus the opening for the hydraulic pump. The engine prefix for the C was FCM, for the Super A FAAM. The A and B did not use the M. But, it looks like IH started using the M prefix a little early, which also may help explain the word "sample", although it is probably "supposed to read" FABM on the same line. Could be intentional, could be misstamped, since the serials were stamped by hand. The only G I can find is for a cotton picker attachment, never used on a B, I don't believe. Or, as you say, it could be a replacement engine.

Actually, there was a cotton picker for a B. I have seen photos of it. Not real popular, and very low production. Probably really rare these days.

This is cast in the block not stamped on the number pad. It is located down on the side of the block about 4 inches above the pan rail. I don't remember for sure but I think the cast date is 8 ?? Q which is August of 1947.

I didn't mean to imply that Sample was stamped, just the serial. I assume the serial is stamped on the pad -- if not I'm lost. Unless Gene or someone comes up with a better answer, I believe you have one of the earliest engines modified to accept the pump.

Since that B was built in LOUISVILLE and the SA and C were being tooled up i have heard that some of the later As and Bs had the blocks for the pumps. What codes are the cast numbers on the block and also the rest of the tractor?

You posted at the same second I did -- if I would have seen it coming, I wouldn't have posted.
